Hot Water Runs Out Fast? Here Is Why and How to Fix It

By Fletcher Plumbing NY · Updated 2026-09-15

If your shower turns cold after ten minutes when it used to last thirty, something changed inside the water heater.

Broken dip tube

The dip tube delivers cold water to the bottom of the tank. When it cracks, cold water mixes at the top and you get lukewarm water quickly. Plastic bits in faucet aerators are a telltale sign.

Failed lower heating element (electric)

Electric heaters have two elements. If the lower one burns out, only the top third of the tank heats. This is a common water heater repair.

Sediment build-up

Inches of sediment take up space that should hold hot water and insulate the burner from the water. A flush restores capacity.

Thermostat set too low

The safe standard is 120°F. If it was turned down, turn it back up.

Undersized tank

A 40-gallon tank cannot keep up with a family of five and a soaking tub. Upsizing or switching to a tankless unit through our water heater installation service gives endless hot water.
